Selecting 10 albums from a year which has produced so many great releases is close to impossible. In the end I’ve had to be ruthless and choose artists who I feel have taken a step forward rather than tread familiar ground. The albums in this list are not presented in order of preference, as to do so would diminish their value and overlook individuality. Instead this is a selection of unique records which you shouldn’t start 2014 without.
Lord Huron – Lonesome Dreams (Play It Again Sam)
‘I’ll search the world until there’s no place left to go. And if she leaves it, I will follow’
Drew Holcomb And The Neigbors – Good Light (Good Time Records)
‘But no matter how far these songs take me, if my dreams come true or the heartaches break me…’
Josh Ritter – The Beast In Its Tracks (Yep Roc)
‘There are things I will not sing for the sting of sour notes’
Treetop Flyers – The Mountain Moves (Loose Music)
‘Memories have their seasons and lessons all fade’
Andrew Duhon – The Moorings (Self Released)
‘They wore that bible belt just a little too tight…’
Paul Mosley – A Chattering Of Birds (Folkwit)
‘So you can bring on the exploding, dancing girls. Because hey! It’s the end of the world’
KT Tunstall – Invisible Empire/Crescent Moon (Virgin)
‘The wave found it’s way to the shore, I thought it was a ripple and nothing more’.
Danny And The Champions Of The World – Stay True (Loose Music)
‘Give up on a dream and you know you’ve lost it’.
Jason Isbell – Southeastern (Southeastern Records)
‘There’s a man who walks beside me, he is who I used to be…’.
Howe Gelb – The Coincidentalist (New West)
‘Welcome to the desert…’
It’s highly recommended that you check out more great releases of 2013 such as Dawes ‘Stories Don’t End’, Case Hardin ‘PM’, Brandy Zdan ‘Lone Hunter’, Rebecca Pronsky ‘Only Daughter’, Benjamin Folke Thomas ‘Too Close To Here’, Amanda Shires ‘Down Fell The Doves’… These are for starters.
Happy New Year.
